How do we move through transitions with more ease?

Updated: May 19, 2023

On September 22nd we moved through the autumnal equinox, when day and night are of equal length. The equinox occurs at a point of balance between the two solstices – summer and winter – and provides a moment to reflect as we find ourselves in between day and night, light and dark, outward-moving and inward-moving energy.

As we move into fall, it can be helpful to pause and reflect on what we have achieved with the busy, active energy of the summer and prepare to move into the more introspective energy of autumn. This transition serves as a liminal moment, a threshold of change... a condition that prevails when are in the process of moving from one stage to the next. This is very much where we are in so many areas of our society right now, a period of transition and significant change.

Now is an ideal time to set an intention for the months ahead: both the possibility to reflect and an opportunity to look forward and make small changes or adjustments. Maybe something hasn’t been working; we can take note and think about how we might show up differently. Maybe we could change direction or try something new and unfamiliar and go beyond our comfort zone. Our yoga mat is a great place to practice this: if we pause and notice how we transition between poses or challenge ourselves to try out a new posture, we may become more self-aware and flexible off the mat as well.
